I’m sorry for your loss. I too, lost my kitty to kidney/renal failure about a week and a half ago. I know now that it was a direct result of the recalled food, but just like you, really had no reason why she fell ill so suddenly. The food that has been recalled has actually been in distrubution since December 2006, so it is my guess that there are hundreds if not thousands of pets who may have been affected by this.
If you’re kitty was otherwise healthy and you have used some of these brands just prior to his death I would assume that he was a victim as well.
If you really want to do some investigative work I would contact the store where you purchase your cat food from and ask the store for a copy of the receipt. You will need certain specific information in order for them to be able to locate the reciept such as the date, approximate time, and total (all of these you can find in your bank statements). Again, it might take a little work, but once you have the reciept you should also have the UPC number that was scanned. I know for certain Walmart has the capability to do this as I have had them print a copy of an old reciept before, however I’m not sure if every store has this capapbility, but it may be worth it to you to find out.
Again, sorry for your loss, my family is grieving the loss of our loved one as well.

That is awful! I am trying to find out what the deal is too. i googled it and there are a lot of sites. I was worried about Fancy Feast, but it seems to be on the safe list. How long after eating the food did your cat die? Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

I dont think there is any way to tell at this point. Kidney failure is not that uncommon in cats regardless of what they eat.

I am so sorry for your loss…I think you should contact your vet right away for the details of his condition at the time of death ie the causes and then contact the website or contact number involved with the recall… Document everything and then pursue this action with the company.Perhaps your local animal shelter or the like could help? It is so tragic to lose a pet at anytime but to lose one like this is even more so..We will be thinking of you and wishing you and your family the best.

Oh no… I am so sorry about your kitty. I would suspect the tainted food right away. There is a group being put together for a possible class action suit against menufoods. You might want to check it out.

How terrible for you. The only way to tell would be if you still had food left over. You could compare the recall list to the numbers on your food.
There are other factors that bring on rapid kidney failure. My cat had kidney failure one week after having a perfect check up and getting her shots. The vet said the shots had nothing to do with it, but research since then has shown that many cats die after being vaccinated.
Other factors for rapid failure would be the cat getting into toxins. These could be ingested or absorbed through the skin. Things like flea dips and collars can even be very toxic to a cat.
According to the many books I have read, kidney failure is common because of all the hazards cats come in contact with and the poor quality of many commercial foods, not because cats are prone to have bad kidneys. Here is a great article on pet food that may give you some answers http://www.belfield.com/article3.html
I was able to save my cat using information from a holistic vet after two regular vets told me it was hopeless. That was in 2001 and my cat April is still doing well. I’m so sorry you were not so fortunate.
