Why Is It Bad To Have Rendered Pets In Pet Food?

I hear a lot οf ѕtοrіеѕ аbουt dead cats аnԁ dogs іn pet food аnԁ I јυѕt wonder whу іѕ іt such a bаԁ thing? Normally, thеу јυѕt рƖасе thе dead euthanized animals іn landfills anyway, ѕο processing thеm instead іntο useful food sources seems ideal. At Ɩеаѕt wе hаνе ѕοmе υѕе fοr thе millions οf dead animals thаt shelter рυt down each day/month/year. Rаthеr thеу аƖƖ ɡο tο waste, I don’t see thе issue here, unless уου thіnk thаt cats eating dead cats аrе ɡrοѕѕ. Bυt іt’s a ɡοοԁ source οf meat nevertheless.

What goes into euthanized pets? The injected medication that was used to end that pet’s life.
Was the pet euthanized because of a disease? Could it be something contagious? Cancer? Possibly something detrimental if consumed by an animal of the same species?
How long was the pet dead before it was hauled away to make pet food? Did it begin to rot? How viable is the protein from rotting flesh?
It makes more sense to use the clean flesh from slaughtered beef, chickens, fish, venison, etc to make food that encourages healthy pets.

Moral issues aside, the biggest danger of putting rendered pets into pet food is that they are generally animals that have been euthanized. The drug that is used to euthanize animals is not destroyed in the rendering process, so you are essentially feeding your pets a lethal drug like phenobarbital or any other anesthesia drug. No studies have been done to see if this is safe for our pets, or in what levels it would be considered safe. For this reason and others, I avoid foods with by-products and/or animal digest in them like the plague.
A better “use” for all of these dead animal carcases would be to create less of them by people being responsible and spaying/neutering their pets so that so many don’t have to be euthanized in the first place.

I guess in countries where they serve what we consider pets as the main course, it wouldn’t seem so bad. I just know I couldn’t knowingly feed my dog someones dead pet.

Do you like the thought of dead people in your spaghetti sauce?
