A fairly easy way is to look at your checking account activity, your credit card activity, and any other sources of money. Look at what the money is being spent on, and decide how much you want to spend for each item. You can use cash withdrawals from your checking account and credit cards as a way to estimate what you’re spending on coffee, magazines, snacks and other smaller items. There’s no magic formula for how much to spend on any particular item–you have to decide for yourself what will work for you. The key is to get your total spending below your income. Make sure to save something first–contributions to retirement accounts should be made automatically from your paycheck.
